Do you occasionally spot an acrobatic titmouse in your garden? And do you want to learn more about this bird species? From the blue tit and great tit to the black tit and crested tit to the long-tailed tit and marsupial tit: these are the basics.

An adult tit is typically small and stocky, between 10 and 16 cm long, and weighs 7 to 29 g. Most tits nest in cavities, for example in trees where they lay from two (red-brown tit) to as many as 14 eggs (blue tit).

Blue tit and great tit

The blue tit is small but radiant in appearance with its azure blue and lemon yellow plumage, white head and black eye stripe. It’s smaller than the great tit, but oh so brave.

The great tit was the second most counted bird during the Great Bird Weekend in Flanders in 2021. You can immediately recognize this dapper bird: a glossy black head with large, white, triangular cheek spots and a yellow belly with a black tie.

Black tit and crested tit

Or was it a black tit you saw, not a great tit? After all, the black tit resembles a small, black and white great tit with white markings on the back of its head and a black crown. Also striking are the two white wing stripes, the large white cheek patch and the black chin and throat. When the bird is excited, it can straighten its crest. Cool!

But the toughest of the tits is the crested tit with its black and white head markings, permanent triangular crest, and black horseshoe-shaped eye stripe. Fairly exceptional: this tit is only found in Europe!

Two outcasts!

We conclude with two species that actually don’t belong to the 'real' tits. First up: the long-tailed tit. If one lands somewhere, you can be sure that more will land in no time. The animal has a tail of no less than 8 cm, thus living up to its name.

The penduline tit (or marsupial tit) is also not a real tit. Why is this bird called that? Because it builds a hanging nest in the form of a pouch. You can recognize this very handy bird out of a thousand, thanks to its typical black Zorro mask ...

Then this is what you have to do: hang suet balls and give them this bird food. Great tits eat insects in the summer, but also seeds and fruits in the winter. Blue tits only eat seeds and fruits in winter. In the fall and winter you may also see a crested tit, black tit and long-tailed tit.
