The Versele-Laga Pet Research Center

A major asset for the innovation of our petfood
At Versele-Laga, innovation and product improvement are center-stage.
Our company is for example one of the few European petfood manufacturers with extensive in-house research facilities, including various dog kennels and catteries. In addition to about a hundred dogs and some fifty cats, the Pet Research Center also accommodates many racing pigeons, ornamental birds and rodents.
In order to improve our animal feeds on an ongoing basis, specialized veterinarians and nutritionists perform continuous nutritional research in our dedicated research center. The wellbeing of the animals is the focus of attention: the various species of animals in various stages of life have spacious accommodation.
Only non-invasive nutritional research is undertaken.

Collaboration with universities and other research centers
Extensive studies are carried out with various universities into the needs of pets.
For a number of years, Versele-Laga has been working with the Loro Parque Fundación. Among other things, the latter is the owner of the renowned 'La Vera' breeding station, where no fewer than 350 different species of birds are housed. This research is done in collaboration with the Gent Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and collects new scientific information on the nutritional needs of psittacids.
By means of comparative taste tests we succeed in providing our formulations with the most palatable ingredients.
Digestive tests are performed to ascertain which part of the nutritional elements is digested. These tests enable us to develop feeds that are distinguished by high digestibility and optimal fecal consistency.
Because cats are highly susceptible to cystitis (Feline Urological Syndrome), all our cat foods are checked for optimal urine pH. These nutrition tests check whether the urine produced is acidic enough and help prevent your cat being troubled by cystitis.
In addition to digestibility, taste and urine pH, the influence of the food on condition, coat, fertility and other important parameters is also continually examined.
In the case of rodents, targeted research projects are set up to prevent dental disorders, caused by an insufficiently abrasive diet.
