1. Why is it so important for dog foods to contain fish products?
Over the past few years, an increasing body of scientific research results has been made available which corroborate the propitious effects of omega-3-fatty acids. Omega-3-fatty acids are a group of essential fatty acids which fill a very special role in the human and canine body. Amongst other things, omega-3-fatty acids have an inflammation-inhibiting effect on the skin, in the intestinal tracts and the joints. Which is why omega-3-fatty acids have a salubrious effect on inflammations of the skin, intestinal disorders and inflammations of the joints. In addition, omega-3-fatty acids play an important part in the supply of oxygen to the brain and the muscular tissue, amongst other parts of the body. For example, omega-3-fatty acids have been shown to stimulate the brain function and the capacity for learning in pups. In humans, omega-3-fatty acids have also been shown to have a protective effect against cancer and cardiac and vascular disease.
Omega-3-fatty acids only occur in certain raw ingredients. Linseed is one of the few vegetable products to contain omega-3 in the form of linolenic acid. In dogs, linolenic acid is only converted in part into EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Which is why it is recommended to add omega-3-fatty acids such as EPA and DHA as part of the daily diet. EPA and DHA only occur in fish oils. According to the latest scientific insights, balanced dog foods should therefore contain a due proportion of fish in all cases. In 2005, for the first time, +minimum DHA and EPA standards for dogs were laid down as part of the official NRC-tables (National Research Council) which establishes the nutritional requirements for dogs and a whole range of animals and pets.
2. Why do most Bento Kronen Nutritional Balance products also contain wheat as a cereal?
Wheat is a high-grade, particularly nutritious cereal which offers a host of propitious properties. The high content of gluten in cereals is typical. Amongst other things, these elastic proteins see to it that the dough is made to leaven whilst baking bread. In the production of dog foods too, gluten have a series of highly beneficial properties. Extruding cereals containing gluten produces nicer, stronger chunks that have a smoother surface. Laboratory research taking in texture analysis has shown that these chunks do not break as quickly, allowing the dog's teeth to penetrate deeper into the chunk before the chunk bursts. This prompts improved mechanical dental cleaning which means the animals develop tartar far less quickly. These properties have seen to it that all Bento Kronen Nutritional Balance dog foods have been given the Dental Health icon. Wheat gluten also have a high glutamine content, an amino acid which supports good intestinal health. In rare cases dogs may prove allergic to gluten. For these dogs, we recommend Bento Kronen's Nutritional Balance Lamb & Rice products. Our Lamb & Rice products contain rice as their only source of cereal, which means they are entirely gluten-free, serving as the ideal food for dogs suffering from gluten allergy.

3. Won't my dog get bored having to eat the same thing every day? Shouldn't I infuse more variety into his diet?
In the old days, a dog meal chiefly consisted of raw meat, offering very little in the way of variety in terms of texture or taste. As dogs are fed a certain diet over a protracted period of time, their gastro-intestinal tracts adjust to the nutrients contained in the diet they are fed on. As the diet is abruptly altered, this may cause the gastro-intestinal system to be disrupted. Which in turn may prompt the new food to be absorbed and digested only partially. An abrupt switch in terms of food may even cause diarrhoea or constipation. Which is why we recommend to gradually, in increasing amounts, mix the new feed in with the old feed the animal is used to over a couple of days' time. This allows the dog to adjust to his new feed.
4. Should I moisturise my dog's chunks? I heard this improves digestibility?
We recommend the chunks to be fed dry as this is beneficial to the animal's teeth, by virtue of the increased amount of mechanical cleaning of the teeth. Another benefit of dry chunks lies in the fact that they are less prone to spoilage.
5. What is the right feeding dosage for my dog?
All our packagings show the feeding tables for each type and size of dog. These same tables are also included in our information brochures and as part of the technical facts of our products sheets available on this web site. The important thing to remember is that these food tables in all cases set out from the weight of the adult animal. If you are looking to find the right dosage to feed a pup, simply refer to the table under the adult weight which the pup should ultimately reach. Please note that the feed tables only serve as a guideline. Especially as requirements depend on a wide number of different factors such as physiology, breed, age and ambient temperatures. So it is important to adjust the portions fed to the condition your dog is in, and if required, to feed less or more compared against recommended daily rations. (Tip: you should be able to make out the individual ribs through the coat in a dog that is in prime condition). Also make sure that any changes in the diet that is served have to be made gradually. This enables your dog to adjust to its new diet.
6. I serve my dog Bento Kronen as a complete dog food. Is it necessary to feed extra meat?
It is a widespread misconception that industrially manufactured dog foods contain inadequate rations of meat, a fallacy which continues to linger in the mind of some dog lovers. Rest assured that meat is the principal component of our products. Moreover, the quality of the meat used in our dry foods is of a higher quality compared to meat which is available through other channels (your local butcher, frozen products...). Bento Kronen chunks which guarantee a complete, high-quality diet, are composed by expert nutritionists and duly contain all of the nutritional elements required in order to ensure that your dog enjoys perfect health and optimal, balanced growth. Adding meat to our complete food may upset the duly considered balance of the ration and cause health problems. For example, adding fresh meat may disrupt your dog's digestion. Moreover, inferior quality meat may prompt flatulence and/or diarrhoea.

7. Where lies the benefit offered by the Bento Kronen Nutritional Balance Lamb & Rice dog foods?
Bento Kronen Nutritional Balance Lamb & Rice food can be used in a wide variety of different circumstances
(incl. any number of coat and digestive problems). The principal indications are food allergies and intolerances. Bento Kronen Lamb & Rice offers a diet containing a source of protein (lamb) which most dogs have never been in contact with and against which, therefore, they cannot be allergic. For the allergies dogs suffer usually tend to be reactions against the protein fractions contained in the food they eat (beef, pork, etc). So it is important your dog has not been in touch with the protein source of the food. As the symptoms of food allergies are predominantly skin and coat afflictions, Lamb & Rice foods are often found to be recommended to deal with these symptoms. Bento Kronen Lamb & Rice is one of the very few commercially available dog foods composed of rice as the sole cereal and lamb as the sole type of meat used. Rice is gluten-free and therefore hypoallergenic. Moreover, rice is the cereal that is easiest on the digestive system. All of this combines to make the Bento Kronen Nutritional Balance Lamb & Rice dog food range eminently suited as a highly digestible food for all types of digestive disorders!
8. What are biological antioxidants?
Biological antioxidants are natural products which protect the body cells against ageing. Body cells are under constant attack from so-called free radicals. Biological antioxidants are of inestimable value for humans and animals alike as they neutralize the nefarious, oxidizing effects of these radicals, causing the body cells to live longer, inhibiting the ageing processes and maintaining physical condition. The principal biological antioxidants are the carotenoids (incl. lutein and beta-carotene) as well as vitamins C and E. The Nutritional Balance range of dog foods contains Cell Protect (high doses of vitamins C and E) and Pro Immune (lutein and beta-carotene): this combination of biological antioxidants guarantees optimal protection of the body cells.
