Why is there a collaboration between Loro Parque and Versele-Laga?

1. What is Loro Parque?

Loro Parque is a magnificent, 13 ha zoological park on Tenerife, with among other animals numerous species of parrots. All the animals in the park are given a 'home' that is a faithful reproduction of their natural habitat. Veterinarians closely monitor the animals' health and nutrition. Loro Parque has a double mission: on the one hand to protect threatened animal species from extinction, and on the other to transmit love of nature and respect for animals to the countless visitors.

2. What is the Loro Parque Fundación?

The Loro Parque Fundación is a Foundation, that was set up as a non-profit organisation in 1994 and is closely linked with Loro Parque. Since its inception, the Loro Parque Fundación has already given financial support to 31 different conservation projects over the whole world (amounting to more than 2 million dollars). An endangered parrot or parakeet species is used as a flagship for every project in order to protect the world's most endangered ecosystems.

The Loro Parque Fundación also owns the world's largest and most diversified parrot and parakeet collection. More than 3,400 birds of 330 different species are housed in the 1,000 aviaries of the 'La Vera' breeding station which covers 17,000 m². Here a reserve population of various species whose natural survival is highly endangered represents a last resort against final extinction. In addition, the surplus of young birds makes a twofold contribution to conservation: it restricts the demand for birds caught in the wild and 100 % of the proceeds from the sales is spent on field projects.

3. How does the collaboration between Versele-Laga and the Loro Parque Fundación work?

To support the work of the Loro Parque Fundación, Versele-Laga makes financial resources available. These are at the entire disposal of the Loro Parque Fundación, which determines the projects that benefit. For the Loro Parque Fundación, collaboration ensures substantial financial support for years to come. For Versele-Laga, it offers the guarantee that the resources are used where they are needed most, without the sponsor being open to any reproach of favoritism.

Through this collaboration, Versele-Laga is the exclusive supplier of bird feeds in the Loro Parque zoological park. The collaboration goes further still: there is regular consultation between Loro Parque's scientific staff and Versele-Laga's veterinarians and nutritionists. They focus on improving nutrition in the breeding center and on research programs about bird feeds.
