Questions on additional food with NutriBird pellets

1. Is the breeding formula of NutriBird sufficient in the breeding period or should I supplement with eggfood? Should I give an extra of livefood to my British finches in the breeding period?

2. I have a couple of African greys which do not want to brood themselves. I incubate all their eggs (mostly fertilized) in an incubator. Through this the hen-bird lays eggs about every second month. Should I feed extra calcium with NutriBird P 19?

3. Should I give my birds some grit when I feed with NutriBird?

4. Does one still have to administer certain medication, against worms, coccidiosis... when NutriBird is fed?

5. I breed red canaries. How can I give my birds the redmaker when I use NutriBird?

6. May I use NutriBird C 19 for feeding recessive white canaries?

7. In the past I used to give my birds all kinds of supplementary foods in addition to their seed mixtures. Now that I am using NutriBird, may/must I continue doing this?

1. Is the breeding formula of NutriBird sufficient in the breeding period or should I supplement with eggfood? Should I give an extra of livefood to my British finches in the breeding period?

As far as the ingredients are concerned, the breeding formulas of NutriBird (P 19, G 18, C 19, B 18) are certainly sufficient to assure a prosperous growth of young birds. But since the parent birds, often themselves bred with seeds and eggfood, will only feed their youngsters if eggfood is available, it is advisable to serve to birds with young a daily fresh portion of eggfood. The same is true for converted British finches, which will show a preference for livefood (mealworm, pinky's....) to feed their youngsters.

2. I have a couple of African greys which do not want to brood themselves. I incubate all their eggs (mostly fertilized) in an incubator. Through this the hen-bird lays eggs about every second month. Should I feed extra calcium with NutriBird P 19?

The hen uses about 20 % of the available body-calcium to lay one egg. A higher supply of calcium is therefore desirable in this period. For birds with a high egg lay rate, it is definitely recommended to supplement an extra amount of calcium to the NutriBird P 19: oyster shells, sepia shells, soluble calcium (Orlux Calcilux)...

3. Should I give my birds some grit when I feed with NutriBird?

The NutriBird pellets arrive in the stomach as soaked matter, it can therefore easily be digested without the presence of gravel in the stomach. It may however be beneficial to serve some gravel, for these stones do play an important role in the motoric and peristaltic movements occuring in the stomach and intestine, and in this way they will have a favorable influence on digestion. NutriBird pellets contain sufficient calcium and other minerals and trace-elements to allow for a normal functioning of the organism. The supplementation of grit as extra source of calcium may be advantageous to birds with a high egg production or with young having a very high growth rate.

4. Does one still have to administer certain medication, against worms, coccidiosis... when NutriBird is fed?

The NutriBird pellets contain no medicinal substances, therefore all preventive treatments which are normally carried out, should be maintained. When the birds are on a NutriBird menu, the administration of liquid medication is extremely simple. In the evening all food is removed. The next morning the birds receive about one fourth of their daily ration of pellets, on which the liquid medication has been sprayed. When this portion has been eaten, one can serve the rest of the normal foods. In this way one is sure that all medication has been taken in in the right quantity.

5. I breed red canaries. How can I give my birds the redmaker when I use NutriBird?

For red canaries and a few other red bird species (hooded red siskin, crossbill...) it is necessary to give supplementary foods. The red coloring agent added to the water gives too little guarantee for an effective good coloring of the birds. Therefore the birds should receive a small portion of eggfood mixed with the required redmaker as supplementary food.

6. May I use NutriBird C 19 for feeding recessive white canaries?

One of the characteristics of a recessive white canary is that it does not pick up any color pigmentation in its feathers. The quality of its color is only determined by the structure of its feathers. With these birds, it is imperative to bring them into an optimal condition so that the feathers give the correct light reflection. Feeding NutriBird C 19 will have no influence on the color of recessive white canaries.

7. In the past I used to give my birds all kinds of supplementary foods in addition to their seed mixtures. Now that I am using NutriBird, may/must I continue doing this?

If you wish so, you may, but it is not necessary, you can along with the NutriBird pellets serve a quantity of maximum 20 % other foods. You can choose for yourself: seeds, soaked seeds, eggfood, fruits, vegetables...
